Kate Sanborn: Trailblazing Writer and Lecturer

Kate Sanborn (July 11, 1839 – July 9, 1917) was born in Hanover, New Hampshire to Mary Webster Sanborn and Edwin D. Sanborn, the English professor after whom Dartmouth College’s Sanborn House, the seat of the Department of English and Creative Writing, is named. A prolific writer, scholar, and teacher, Sanborn was described by her brother Edwin Sanborn as “a pioneer in opening the paths of independent work for women,” and her connection to Hanover establishes her as a trailblazing woman of local interest. This module, in collaboration with the Hanover Historical Society and HomeWorks, offers a brief exploration of the life and writings of Kate Sanborn.
