Introduction:
Given the make-up of the members of our group, we thought it would be interesting to learn more about the folklore form our own “folk” group. Dartmouth women’s ice hockey team. Sports teams almost always develop their own traditions, superstitions, and other types of folklore. This tendency is increased by the established nature of the team, and the length of time it has existed. We thought that it would be interesting to take a closer look at a lot of our own traditions, taboos, and superstitions surrounding game days. In order to investigate this, we took a closer look at different member’s pre-game routines and rituals, specifically from members of the 2019-2020 team. Over time it became very clear how important these traditions are to the team and the individuals who make up the team. Each player is very dedicated to these traditions and by continuing on the traditions and rituals, each individual is able to compete at their highest level which ultimately unites the team and allows the team to perform at its best.
