Informant Data:

  • Brooke is a 22 year old girl at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. She was born in Centennial, Colorado with her mom, dad, older brother and sister. She has played ice hockey since she was four years old and continued to play on the varsity team at Dartmouth.

Contextual Data:

  • Social: Coming in as a freshman to Dartmouth, there were three other girls in her grade. They called ourselves the “quad-fun”. After freshman year, one girl quit the team from their class and then there was only Brooke  and two other teammates who were ‘18s. Then they changed their class name to the “Three Locos.”
  • Cultural: Brooke has always been raised in team environments in many different sports. Because of this, she has found the importance of unity and chemistry with the team. She is a firm believer on positive attitude within a team and doing activities or gestures to build up one another confidence.

Item:

  • Starting our sophomore year, the other two girls in her class felt like we needed to do something together before going on the ice for the start of the game, and every period. When they stand next to each other in line waiting to go on the ice in between periods and at the start of the game, they started doing a triple handshake with each other. With this they all would raise their right hand in the air and touch hands at the highest point, making a triangle. This made them feel a sense of unity and that their class was in it together. This has stuck for the remaining three years of their careers.

Collectors Comments:

  • It was really inspiring hearing about this piece of folklore. Because they have such a small class, only three people, it is important for them to stay close.
