What is Sustainability?

Welcome!

On this webpage, I present information about the environment and society through the lens of sustainability and seek to describe the best approaches to a sustainable future.

The site is separated into three main parts (see menu above): What Is Sustainability?, Learning from the Past, and Envisioning the Future. Together, these sections outline the steps necessary to move towards sustainability and describe how a plurality of viewpoints and solutions are necessary to save our environment, and our society.

What is Sustainability?

To begin our path towards a sustainable future, we must first determine what “sustainability” actually means. The concept map below shows my definition of sustainability:

Map Description: The map shows a condensed version of the four main world views on sustainability. I believe aspects of each world view are necessary to properly define sustainability, drawing on global cooperation, sustainable development, empowering marginalized people, and providing ecological education to everyone. The green arrows describe the ideas I believe are most beneficial from the world views, and the red arrows are aspects of today’s society each world view hopes to mitigate.

Case Importance: The most important aspect of this concept map is to show that although each of these world views emphasize different solutions, accommodating a variety of viewpoints is the best way to start thinking about sustainable transitions. Changing our unsustainable society will require a multitude of actors and active engagement across ideologies.

It is also important to think about sustainable transitions through historical examples of where we went wrong, which are described further in Learning from the Past.
