What is Sustainability?
In this first concept map, one should learn about 4 differing worldviews that each have different ideas about what a sustainable future should look like and how to get there: Market Liberals, Institutionalists, Bioenvironmentalists, and Social Greens. This is interesting because it shows that there is not only one “correct” idea of sustainability and the possible routes to achieve it. The diversity of these ideas represented showcases the wide range of paths to sustainability as well as the “problems” that block the road on the way there, and how one’s path to sustainability won’t look like anyone else’s. A key to the map is provided below.
This map has a sort of “space invaders” theme which represents the problems of sustainability as seen by the different views as asteroids, the solutions to these problems are represented as the rockets that are “destroying” the asteroids, and finally the rockets are protecting their different worlds from the asteroids as they represent the “best world” for each differing worldview. The blue and purple color coding is simply to show how while some views may find certain concepts to be solutions to problems, other views find them to be problems in themselves. The circling of certain concepts is to show my own personal perspective of sustainability and what I agree with as problems and solutions to these problems, while the highlighting is simply for terms that might need further explanation (which is provided here).
