Duse in Cinema

Duse made only one film in her lifetime, entitled Cenere. Despite the above title, the film came out in 1917. Cenere was not successful in its time, but Duse realized the power of the art form and its implications for actors. It is a rare glimpse into the artistry of Duse which occurred almost entirely before the cinematic age. However, Duse remains intertwined in the lineage of American acting in cinema through her inspiration for so many famed acting teachers who came to admire her as they worked during the Twentieth century.
