Hello!/ ¡Hola!
My name is Perla and I am a sophomore at Dartmouth College. I'm from Salt Lake City, Utah and I'm studying anthropology. After graduation I would like to take a year off to travel and have some time to myself. After that, I would like to pursue a career as a chiropractor. On campus, I am a part of the Global Village community at Dartmouth in addition to working as a drill instructor for Spanish. Some of my interests include going back home in Utah and going on a nice hike in the mountains with my sister and dog. I love being able to get away from the city a bit and explore the valley right in my own back yard. I also enjoy taking long naps and traveling. Although I have not travelled that much outside of the United States, I have visit Mexico about twice a year since I was a few weeks old but that has been the extent of my international travel. I'm also planning on going on the FSP for Anthropology to New Zealand for my junior winter but I definitely want to travel more and be able to immerse myself in different cultures in the future.
Mi nombre es Perla y estoy en mi segundo año de la Universidad en el colegio de Dartmouth. Soy de Salt Lake City, Utah, y estoy estudiando antropología. Estoy involucrada con la comunidad de la aldea planetaria en Dartmouth. También trabajo como una instructora de español. Algunos de mis intereses incluyen volver a casa en Utah y pasar una agradable excursión en las montañas con mi hermana y mi perro. Me gusta escaparme un poco de la ciudad y explorar el valle justo en mi propio patio trasero. También me gusta tomar largas siestas y viajar. Aunque no he viajado mucho fuera de los Estados Unidos, e visitado México aproximadamente dos veces al año desde que yo era pequeña, pero eso ha sido el alcance de mis viajes internacionales. También estoy planeando ir en el FSP a Nueva Zelandia como parte de mi estudio de antropología para el invierno en mi tercer año de la universidad. Pero definitivamente quiero viajar más y ser capaz de sumergirme en las diferentes culturas en el futuro.
I chose to get involved with the Nicaragua CCESP because I have never really understood what volunteering abroad meant. Of course I knew what it was about but I wanted to know more about what it entailed and why so many people thought it was a life-changing experience. Taking the LACS 20 course has helped me gain knowledge and understanding of Nicaragua and service in preparation for this trip that I would not have received if I chose to just do a volunteering abroad service on my own. It has been a valuable and insightful class that is not just applicable to this trip but to any service trips that I wish to do in the future.
Yo elegí a involucrarme con el CCESP a Nicaragua porque nunca he entendido realmente lo que significaba el voluntariado en el extranjero. Por supuesto yo sabía de qué se trataba, pero yo quería saber más acerca de lo que implica y por qué tanta gente piensa que es una experiencia que cambia la vida. Tomando el curso de LACS 20 me ha ayudado a adquirir conocimientos y comprensión de Nicaragua y el servicio en la preparación de este viaje que yo no hubiera recibido si hubiera hecho un servicio de voluntariado en el extranjero por mi propia cuenta. Ha sido una valiosa y perspicaces clase que no sólo es aplicable a este viaje pero a cualquier servicio que quiero hacer en el futuro.
I'm excited to go on this trip and see how I'll be able to help the Nicaraguan community especially since I'm on the community development team where I'll be able to help hands-on. Knowing Spanish will definitely help me with that experience in being able to connect and speak with the people in the community. I hope to come out of this experience knowing that I was able to do something beneficial for the Nicaraguans and grow by learning from members I connect with.
Estoy muy contenta de ir en este viaje y ver cómo voy a ser capaz de ayudar a la comunidad nicaragüense especialmente por que estoy en el equipo de desarrollo de la comunidad donde voy a poder ayudar con manos a la obra. Saber español definitivamente ayudará con esa experiencia en poder conectar y hablar con la gente en la comunidad. Espero salir de esta experiencia sabiendo que yo era capaz de hacer algo beneficioso para los nicaragüenses y crecer aprendiendo de los miembros con quien me conecte.
