Oral History

As part of my oral history project for LACS 20, I had the opportunity to interview Regan Plekenpol who went on the CCESP trip as part of the community health team last year. We talked a little bit about her involvement with volunteering abroad and  her experience with these service trips.

Interview Quotes:

  • "One thing that was helpful was that I didn't really feel culture shock in a big way when I went to Nicaragua because growing up abroad I've seen a lot of places and have been exposed to a lot of uncomfortable situations and have become pretty attuned to how to adjust and be culturally sensitive and appreciate another culture."
  • "This [Nicaragua] was pretty much the real deal we were staying in mosquito nets, we were eating rice and beans everyday which was great it was delicious but we were eating what the people there were eating we weren't staying in a nice hotel."
  • "We were living with the people. When we walked home we were walking home with the kids we were playing with on the way."
  • "CCESP showed me what needs to be done. More about the problems that need to be addressed and the work that needs to be continually done. It didn't feel conclusive, it felt like a work in progress-- Like a drop in the ocean. It felt like the beginning of a massive mission. This inspired me to continue pursuing these goals and to continue learning and getting myself in a position where I'd be able to help with organizations like Bridges to Community in a bigger way."
