Pre-College

Why save pre-college writing?

We've built a Pre-College page in your portfolio because we know it's important to remember where you've been. You're not starting over as a writer at Dartmouth, and you should be able to both use and build on your experiences and abilities as you encounter new challenges.

Scholarship on so-called "knowledge transfer" tells us that students who consciously reflect on their learning are more likely to use and update old knowledge effectively in the future. There will be new challenges at Dartmouth, new kinds of writing, and new expectations, and you will need to try new approaches and change old habits. But don't lose sight of everything you've learned; we want you to adapt as a writer, not to start over.

Free Gelato!

You might have heard that we're offering a free gelato at the Hanover Morano Gelato store to any '23 who uploads their pre-college work by September 9th (2019). It's true! If you upload that work to your Pre-College page, we'll ask your first-year writing faculty to give you a redeemable card once your course begins. Contact us at DartWrite@Dartmouth.edu if you feel you uploaded on time but didn't get your card.

How to upload your work

You can upload pre-college work on your Pre-College page in a few ways. If you're logged in, you can visit the page you want to change and select "Edit Page" from the top ribbon. Then, you have two options:

  • Use the Add Media button in the page edit view to upload the file to your site storage and add a link to the file on the page.
  • Copy the contents of your project and paste it into the page so that the project is readable as a web page. You may have to reformat to fix font and alignment.

Since your first-year writing faculty may invite you to share your pre-college writing and to chat with you about it, you might also consider writing a short description of the project on this page, one that would help both them and a future you understand the context of the project.
