Opinion: Zika Virus and Maternal Health

Provide some feedback and some analysis of your classmates' final project presentations that you viewed on Tues. 11/8. If you missed the presentations on Tues. 11/8 you can view them in the Echo360 lecture capture for this date. Focus on only one of the presentations and the pairings are below.

I really enjoyed Amrit, Charly, and Sydney’s presentation on Zika. It was nice to learn about the biology of the Zika virus, how it infects both animals and humans, and the symptoms. The presentation was particularly scary for me because I will be in countries in Latin America with Zika virus for 4 months straight, and I could possibly not know if I was infected by the virus. Even more alarming is that the effects of the virus are still unknown and there is no protection against it. In terms of their on-the-ground project, I think it will be difficult to gather data on Zika occurrences in Hormiguero because there is no easy way to test for it, and furthermore the disease is asymptomatic so it would be hard to determine the frequency of the disease in the area. The handout seems very informative, though, and I think that it would be very appreciated to spread awareness in the area.
