Below I have provided descriptions on two projects presented by my classmates. The projects include an analysis of the proposed construction of a canal in Nicaragua and the other project focuses on dental health.
The Canal- Shay, Jihbran, and Andrew
I will be providing feedback and analysis on Jibran's, Andrew's, and Shay's presentation. Their presentation was on the Nicaraguan Canal Project and it provided an economic analysis and historical context of the project. I thought this was a very relevant issue because it is a project that has been proposed in Nicaragua and has attracted a lot of controversy. I thought it was very interesting that they addressed the importance of the reports and investigations in the context of the project. For example, they made a good to point to state that the project could potentially attract trade and produce jobs, but at the same time they explored the ambiguity of the proposed projects and exposed the company bias that may be encouraging the project without full knowledge or analysis of potential environmental, social, and economic impact the project may have. Andrew first introduced the topic by discussing the geopolitics of the area and the proposal made by HKND which is a Chinese stationed company that has proposed to build a canal that they say would encourage the growth of trade in the region because it would cut the distance ships would need to take from Europe, A problem that was discussed was the actual need and demand for this canal. The canal would be very expensive, some reports have also suggested that the actual costs may not have been correctly calculated. Calculations have stated that the project would cost 40 billion dollars and others suggest that 80 billion dollars would be the actual cost. The group also raised the the concern that the project may be costly without much benefit because the panama canal is not too far and the project proposed by HKND will not be able to accommodate very large ships. From an economic standpoint the lack of need for the project in the region presents issues. The group then presented the issue of environmental impacts. The project would displace families and the potential for oil spills could be detrimental for communities because it would be in a confined space. Clean-up would be difficult, costly, and time consuming- all these points were covered in great detail by the group. The impact of oil spills would pose a threat for communities that rely on local water sources, with water sanitation being a serious issue in Nicaragua already this would present threat to the health and well-being of Nicaragua.The presenters were very eloquent and appeared well prepared and well-rehearsed for their presentation. They had clearly put in a lot of time and effort to their research, the presenters were very professional and I really enjoyed their topic.
Dental Health- Patricia and Rocco
I found their project to be the most whimisical and easiest to implement in Nicaraguan households. They highlighted the importance of dental health and the lack of dental health that exists in the rural regions of Nicaragua. In order to increase awareness of the importance of dental health among children they created a tooth brush holder that kids would be able to paint themselves and then take home to share with their family. The toothbrush holder can hold up to four toothbrushes- this design then encourages kids to share the knowledge they learn about dental health with their families. While this may not eliminate dental health issues that exist it will increase awareness and knowledge on how kids can combat the issue.

A continuación he proporcionado descripciones en dos proyectos presentados por mis compañeros de clase. Los proyectos incluyen un análisis de la propuesta de construcción de un canal en Nicaragua y el otro proyecto se centra en la salud dental.

El canal sería muy caro, algunos informes han sugerido también que los costes reales pueden no haber sido calculado correctamente. Los cálculos han indicado que el proyecto costaría 40 mil millones de dólares y otros sugieren que 80 mil millones de dólares sería el costo real. El grupo también planteó la preocupación de que el proyecto puede ser costoso, sin mucho beneficio porque el canal de Panamá no está demasiado lejos y el proyecto propuesto por HKND no será capaz de dar cabida a grandes buques. Desde un punto de vista económico la falta de necesidad de que el proyecto en la región presenta problemas. Posteriormente, el grupo presentó el tema de los impactos ambientales. El proyecto sería desplazar las familias y la posibilidad de derrames de petróleo podría ser perjudicial para las comunidades, ya que sería en un espacio confinado. Limpieza sería difícil, costoso y el tiempo consuming- todos estos puntos fueron cubiertos en gran detalle por el grupo. El impacto de los derrames de petróleo podría representar una amenaza para las comunidades que dependen de las fuentes de agua locales, con el saneamiento del agua es un problema grave en Nicaragua ya este presentaría amenaza para la salud y el bienestar de los presentadores Nicaragua.The era muy elocuente y apareció así preparada y ensayada para su presentación. Habían puesto claramente en una gran cantidad de tiempo y esfuerzo para su investigación, los presentadores fueron muy profesionales y realmente disfrutaron de su tema.
Dental Salud- Patricia y Rocco
Me pareció que su proyecto sea el más whimisical y más fácil de implementar en los hogares nicaragüenses. Destacaron la importancia de la salud dental y la falta de salud dental que existe en las regiones rurales de Nicaragua. Con el fin de aumentar la conciencia sobre la importancia de la salud dental de los niños crearon un titular de cepillo de dientes que los niños podrían pintarse y luego llevar a casa para compartir con su familia. El titular de cepillo de dientes puede contener hasta cuatro toothbrushes- este diseño entonces anima a los niños a compartir los conocimientos que aprenden sobre salud dental con sus familias. Si bien esto no puede eliminar los problemas de salud dental que existen además de aumentar la conciencia y el conocimiento de cómo los niños pueden combatir el problema.
