The assignment for this essay was to answer the question “What is the literate arts?” in relation to our own personal experiences after reading an excerpt from Richard Miller’s “The Dark Night of the Soul”. In my paper, I extrapolate the definition of the literate arts beyond the printed word to media, which I believe was necessary to analyze Miller’s essay and the prompt in context of today’s society and its increased usage of technology. Through the lens of Miller’s analysis, I explain what the literate arts is and the importance of it using the TV show Fresh Off the Boat.
I chose this as my best piece from my Writing 5 class because it was my most personal essay that related directly to my identity as an Asian-American of immigrant parents.
