My name is Amrit Ahluwalia and I am a sophomore at Dartmouth College. I am from Newtown, Pennsylvania and I am 18 years old. At University I intend to major in Anthropology with a minor in Global Health and I am also a pre-med student. I intend to become a doctor but my goal is to become a Global Health policy-maker so that I can combine my interest in medicine with my aptitudes for critical thinking and communicating to institute positive change on a large scale.

On campus I am a member of the varsity field hockey team which takes up the majority of my time outside of classes. I am also a member of Dartmouth Coalition for Global Health. In my free time I am a very simple girl and enjoy working out, reading, and hanging out with my friends. I am always seeking out new experiences, different people, and challenging myself to expand my knowledge and worldview by taking up every possible opportunity. My friends and family sometimes think I’m crazy….I say that it would be a crime for me not to take every chance I can! That is one of the reasons I dove into the Nicaragua CCESP and I have no regrets.

I have done some work with the Dartmouth Center for Service before, most notably working at and HIV/AIDS clinic this summer through their Boston Community Health Internship program, but the Nicaragua CCESP struck me as especially up my alley. I am someone who constantly challenges myself and wants to learn the next new and exciting thing and this trip is totally out of my comfort zone. I have never been to a Spanish speaking country, forget Central America, and I have never been on a proper service trip either. However, experiencing new cultures and doing service are both close to my heart and I was also inspired by how this CCESP emphasizes cross-cultural exchange and, most importantly, empowers the locals by maintaining longstanding relationships and providing them with information and knowledge to stand on their own two feet.

This CCESP experience perfectly combines my personal interests and academic aspirations and I feel fortunate to be able to take LACS 20, meet my incredible peers and future CCESP teammates, and eventually take this trip to Nicaragua. I intend to use this blog to compile much of the work I do for this class as well as return to it after the trip to document my no doubt amazing experience and I hope you will stick around to hear about it!
