From Calgary in 1988 to Beijing in 2022
Over the years, the women in green have been well represented at every Winter Olympics from 1988 in Calgary to this year’s games in Beijing, competing in a variety of events from skiing and biathlon to hockey and luge. In the last 10 Winter Olympics, Dartmouth has seen 35 Olympians and eight Medalists from its women’s teams, sending more athletes to the winter games than any other Ivy League school. The 2022 games are no exception to Dartmouth’s long tradition of success at the winter games.
Dartmouth women’s hockey has arguably seen the most success in the Olympics with multiple players being a part of medalist teams. Women’s ice hockey was officially added as an Olympic sport in 1998, and every year Dartmouth hockey has sent players to the games. In 1998, Gretchen Ulion ‘94 and Sarah K. Teuting ‘98 won the first gold in women’s hockey with Team USA. The following three games in 2002, 2006, and 2008, Cherie L. Piper ‘06 (top left) won gold with Team Canada. In 2006, Piper played alongside two of her Dartmouth teammates, Gillian Apps ‘06 (bottom left) and Katherine Weathersten ‘06 (right).
Dartmouth women’s skiing has its own long history of success in the Winter Olympics, sending athletes competing in cross country, biathlon, and alpine skiing. Leslie Thomas ‘86, a nordic skier, was the first woman from the Dartmouth ski team to compete in the Olympics. Thomas went on to compete at two more Olympics in Albertville in 1992 and Lillehammer in 1994. Since 1988, Dartmouth has sent 25 women to the Olympics, with eight of them competing in biathlon.
Outside of hockey and skiing, Cameron Myler ‘92 competed in the luge event representing the United States in four Olympics (1988, 1992, 1994, and 1998). While Myler was a member of the national team she was named US Female Luge Athlete of the Year nine times. At the ‘94 games, Myler was nominated to carry the flag in the opening ceremony in Lillehammer.
This year in Beijing, we are represented by seven Dartmouth women in green: Patricia Mangan ’19 (top left), AJ Hurt ’23 (bottom right), Rosie Brennan ’11 (middle right), Julia Kern ’19, Susan K. Dunklee ’08 (bottom left), Nina O’Brien ’20 (top right), and Laura Stacey ’16 (middle left). A complete list of all Dartmouth women to compete in the winter games since 1988 is included below.
