Writing Before Dartmouth

Evidence-Based Writing: 11th Grade English Paper

Personal Piece: College Essay

Reflection:

As a academic writer in high school, I was perhaps a bit less refined. It would be misleading to say that my writing was bad, it was just less polished. I often had issues with accidentally repeating myself and generally not expanding on arguments that I had made. In terms of academic writing, I did not spend too much time rereading and looking over my arguments to check for “good writing” because in high school, what I wrote was (in terms of grades and the like) good enough. I never became that attached to the quality of my academic writing because I was never that invested in it, and that attitude shows slightly. My college essay was really the first essay that I spent a large amount of time on, producing many drafts and writing and rewriting sections with input from many other people. In terms of content, I’m now kind of displeased with how shallow and gimmicky it sounds, but then again college essay writing lacks the true depth of other academic writing. Through that transition, however, of moving from essays that I really did not care about that much to an essay that I did care more about, the voice of my writing began to show itself and began to develop into something that I could almost call “my own style”. Of course, it still has a long way to go before it truly becomes a my own unique style of writing, but I do not doubt that this course will have a large impact on it.
