Tailour Garbutt is a ’16 from Los Angeles, California. She is an English and African & African American Studies double major. Tailour became interested in Black History at Dartmouth when she learned of the story of Edward Mitchell, the first black man to attend the College. Her senior independent research project, “Speaking Our Truths: Oral Histories of Black Women at Dartmouth College,” documents the histories of 14 Black women, both current students and alumnae. In many ways, this project has been a source of healing for Tailour, giving her room to reflect on her time at Dartmouth and also showing her the ways in which her experiences are connected to a rich, resilient history.
