Languages

My first language was English, but I have always listened to French and Haitian Creole through some medium. Whereas most of my extensive family knows that languages I only have basically conversational skills in both French and Creole because they were not spoken directly in my household. My younger brother had a speech impediment at a young age therefore it was advised that my parents only speak one language in the house so that he was not confused.

I started learning creole to connect with my grandmother who lived with me and spoke little English. I have studied French since my junior year of high school and as of spring term 2015 I finished my language requirement in French. My skills do not extend further then that but I continue to practice towards fluency.

My interests are to study the role of education on community development in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa where a majority of the countries either speak French or Spanish. Therefore I will have to learn Spanish at one point so that I would have a language barrier within my line of research. If I was going on the CCESP service program this year I would be concerned by my lack of Spanish proficiency however, I am confident that others around me would be able to translate.
