Reflection LACS 20

The time has come, It is the end of the term now and my in class-experience with LACS 20 is over. I signed up on a whim after hearing a couple of positive reviews and joining some friends who decided to take the class. That whim payed off, I am extremely happy to have taken this course over the past term

Throughout the term we learned about a variety of topics and had several conversations that really informed my thinking on development. The idea of "voluntourism" is something I had not considered previous to this class. Talking about the issues related to "voluntourism" illustrated the potential harm this type of mentality can have on service-work and communities. I also learned a lot about public health and environmental issues in Nicaragua, such as the problems with dengue, pregnancy care, and the Nicaraguan canal. I enjoyed the various guest speakers we had in class and especially liked the conversations we had with students in Nicaragua. The stories and perspectives shared by the group of "Los Hijos de Maiz" struck me. This in-class discussion really connected many of the topics we had learned about through the perspective of Nicaraguans.

While I am not attending the CCESP trip at the end of this term, I will carry what I have learned to any development oriented class in the future. Moreover, I hope to participate with the CCESP trip in the future and continue my experience with LACS 20
