Ethnography

In class we have been discussing the importance of ethnography and oral histories. Oral Histories are an essential component to the outside understanding of a foreign culture and community. I thought participation in an ethnography exercise was interesting and good practice for future oral histories.

While excited, I was ambivalent about the exercise at first. I had never conducted an interview before so I was nervous about the process. I ended up deciding to interview one of my good friends, who had been to Nicaragua before. This, thankfully took a lot of pressure off the interview.

I interviewed  Lindsay Salem, a member of the Dartmouth class of 2018. Lindsay has been to Nicaragua four times; she has volunteered in the city of Jinotega on each of her visits. She works with an organization called AVODEC or Asociacion de Voluntarios para el Desarollo. Through AVODEC she has been able to help the community in various ways, she has been especially involved with the Casa Materna in the city. Last winter break I traveled to Jinotega with Lindsay
