Discussion 6: On Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera

I liked and disliked many things about this film. One of the things I really liked about the film was the way Julie Taymor ingenuously included Frida’s art in different scenes. It was not only visually appealing but it also created a sense of magical realism, much like Frida’s art incorporated as well. I also really liked how Taymor portrayed Frida’s feminist side. Scenes such as her taking the longest swig of drink or yelling at Rivera in the school auditorium really helped to develop her character, through showing and not telling. One thing I didn’t particularly like about the film was the way it primarily focused her and Diego’s relationship. All of Frida’s suffering seemed to be tied to him, and I think Taymor could have done a better job of building Frida’s individualism.

One of my favorite parts of the film was the costumes. They were very aesthetically pleasing and also helped to build Frida’s character. They showed her indigenous roots and her concerted effort to stand out and practice art through her dress. Overall, I really enjoyed this film and enjoyed its nuanced insight into Frida’s life, Diego Rivera’s life, and Mexican culture.
