Early life in the United States

A picture of the Taqueria Chain where Tita worked

The first time that I came over to the United States I came here legally through the company I was working with. I met up with my sister here and lived with her for a while but things went pretty badly. Everyone in the community knew each other and I was the outsider, there were rumors circulating. Some pretty bad rumors. I didn’t realize that most of them were started by my sister to cover up the life that she was living. I only lived with her for three months before I got fed up with her and quit my job at the company. I started instead to work at a Taqueria and I rented my own apartment.

It was in the Taqueria that I met the boy who would turn out to be my husband, we lived together as friends for a while before we actually started a relationship together.

I remember I was dating someone else when I came to the United States. He was my boyfriend of six years and I thought I was probably going to marry him. The only problem was that he was very attached to his mother. In the end it came down to her or me. Well I decided to start dating here. That’s where I met my husband. We worked at the Taqueria together and he was always really sweet. I never let him pay for anything though, I didn’t want to feel obligated to anyone. We dated for a couple of months and then on the day that he proposed to me my ex boyfriend came over to the United States wanting to propose to me as well but he wanted me to go back to Mexico. I had no plans of doing that and it had been a long time since we had talked. So I married my husband from the Taqueria

I didn’t really expect to return to Mexico after being here for and finding my husband.
