Scavenger Hunt: Description

Instructions

The Scavenger Hunt has two components:

  1. List of items you need to find on this scavenger hunt;
  2. Reflection Questions.

Scavenger Hunt List

Buy the following items:

  • Food Items: kursani (chili powder), Wai-Wai noodles, curry powder
  • Personal Items: tika, kathak, incense
  • Newspaper in a foreign language
  • Souvenir: one item that you think is most representative of the culture in the neighborhood you visited.

Photographs

  • Signs in different South Asian or Himalayan languages
  • Advertisement for immigration law office, alternative medicine
  • Statue or landmark
  • Piece of art or mural
  • Place where locals hang out
  • Restaurant that serves food from the Himalaya or Tibet
  • Hybridity in religion, identity, values

Reflection Questions

  • Why did you pick the souvenir you brought back? What does it represent to you? What are the limits of representing a different culture through a physical item?
  • What did you learn about the geography and demographics of Jackson Heights?
  • If you had more time, how would you learn more about the neighborhood’s culture?
  • How did your perceptions of Jackson Heights change after your visit to the neighborhood?
