Throughout the course, we were exposed to many ambassadors of organizations and programs who spend their lives trying to help the lives of Nicaraguans across the country. From Michael Boudreau of Compas de Nicaragua to learning about the works of the Fabretto Foundation, I was truly in awe with the work that has been done as well as the passion these individuals have on continuously doing what they can to try to make the lives of others more comfortable and enjoyable.
After watching Dreaming Nicaragua is when I truly appreciated the impact of the Fabretto Foundation. The film is about hope. It is about how channeling courage and love, even in tragic environments, can lead to a better life. This is something I see the Fabretto Foundation embodying and contributing towards. In the beginning of the film, we learn how the Foundation has been helping Nicaraguan children for over 50 years and advancing scholarship of the youth. By giving many children an extra four hours of schooling and making sure every child in their program is fed a full meal in school, they are providing a constant sense of security in these children’s lives. This is what is needed to foster prosperity and growth for children. If they have to spend their childhood focusing on contributing to the wellbeing of their families, instead of using that time and energy to advance opportunity in their lives, progress will rarely be seen.
The Fabretto Foundation does not only focus on one program in Nicaragua. They have developed a range of programs and and implemented their projects in over 300 public schools throughout Nicaragua. According to their website (fabretto.org), these include: Early and Primary Education, Rural Secondary Education (SAT), Vocational and Life Skills Education, Food Security and Nutrition, and Community Well-being and Development. The work they do, in essence, is life-changing. For instance, for their Early and Primary Education movement, they do not only focus on one or two subjects, but subjects ranging from mathematics, to culture, to English, all the way to the arts. On top of this, they incorporate 21st century technology into the classroom and provide meals via community gardens.
The Fabretto Foundation is just one of many programs contributing towards a better quality of life for children in Nicaragua. After going through LACS20, I am excited more than ever to work with Bridges to Community and help where I can. Although I will not be as skilled as many of the local people and professionals in the area, I look to gain new skills and learn ways to make a positive difference without being an expert in certain fields. The trip will certainly provide experience on creating a sense of hope and security to people that are trusting us enough to help make their daily life more comfortable.
