Public school founded in Tampa to educate freed slaves. Part of what became know as The Scrub or Central Avenue in downtown Tampa, which was a location on the Chitlin Circus.

Beulah Baptist Church- 1865

“Archive photo of the Beulah Baptist Institutional Church.” Keith Morelli

Formed by a group of freed slaves from Tampa Baptist Church in 1865, still serves as a venue for black theatre performances.

An article in the tribune notes that Beulah Baptist “has long played a unique role in worship and in the fight for civil rights for Tampa’s African-American community” and even “serving as the launching point for the first African-American investment company in Tampa, sending an African-American choir to sing on local radio for the first time”.
