Nicaraguan Presenters/Visitors

Nicaraguan Presenters.

For me throught this class one of the most valuable learning experiences has been the interactions we’ve  had with the people from NIcaragua. A lot of what we do is think about how this people might think, but when you actually  get the opportunity to ask them it completely changes things. Hugo for example, explained to me they real public opinion on pesticides in Nicaragua and he said that more than anything people felt abandoned. This was something I didn’t find anywhere else while doing my research.

Many of the opinions/ideas of the Nicaraguan presenters are simple things that matter a lot more to them than the broad topics we discussed in class.  I realized that there is a lot of value in having real complex people to talk to because when talking about them in a subconscious way we reduce  their lives  to the struggles they face. however, these are not all that they are and are probably not even the most significant part of who they are. For example, the daughters of corn performers said they didn’t need a lot of the stuff we had in the United States, because they were happy with how their lives were and what they had back in Nicaragua.

On a different note, The Daughters of Corn Dance Troupe had an amazing performance. I thought their combination of the dance and the video gave the performance a lot of depth that truly allowed us to see Nicaragua. I think programs like this are extremely valuable, because they provide opportunities that this youth would other wise not have, such as traveling to new places. These programs also allow for the promotion of the performers, by giving this young people a vocation, and of Nicaragua because if displays its culture internationally.

This video showcases the performances of The Daughters of Corn Dance Troupe.
